Questions
The things people actually ask.
The beta
How do I get into the beta?
With an invite code. We’re letting people in in small waves, so we can listen closely and improve things between each one. If you don’t have a code, request an invite and we’ll add you to the next wave.
What do testers get?
Premium, free for the whole beta: Mercury remembers you between conversations, reads all four traditions, reads the sky on any date you name and compares you with someone, up to 15 messages a day. And one written report of your choice, on us.
Nothing on the site takes a card. If you’d like to stay once we launch, you can reserve a founding membership from your account, at the founding price, and we’ll email you before anything is charged.
Will there be real astrologers?
Yes. Third House is also a place to book real, vetted astrologers, for a live reading by the minute or a scheduled one. They join after the beta, once Mercury is where we want it. Until then, Mercury will tell you plainly when a question deserves a person.
I’m an astrologer. Can I read on Third House?
Yes, once the beta wraps up. For now it’s Mercury alone, and when Mercury is where we want it, the astrologer side opens, starting with the application. Leave your email below and we’ll write the day it opens.
Where do I tell you what's wrong?
Write to hello@thirdhouse.app, about anything: a reading that missed, a page that confused you, or Mercury saying something odd. A report has its own button for one that got something wrong, and we read every one of those personally.
Your chart
I don’t know what time I was born.
Say so, there’s a box for it. We’ll still put every planet in its sign, which is most of a chart, but we won’t show houses or a rising sign, because without a time those are simply unknowable.
Please don’t guess. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so a guess gives you a chart that’s confidently wrong in a way you can’t see. If you find the time later (birth certificates usually have it), correct it and the chart gets recast. What you still get without one.
Why is my Sun sign different in the Vedic chart?
Because Vedic astrology anchors the zodiac to the fixed stars and Western anchors it to the seasons, and over two thousand years the two have drifted about 24° apart, so most people land a sign earlier in Vedic. Neither one is a mistake. They measure from different starting points, deliberately. The full answer, or the four traditions side by side.
Why are my houses different from another app’s?
Because there’s more than one way to divide a chart into its twelve houses, and apps choose differently. Your signs, degrees, rising sign and Midheaven will match any correct chart, and what can move is which house a planet sits in when it’s close to the edge of one.
We use each tradition’s own way. Western charts use Placidus, the convention most Western astrologers and their software follow, and Hellenistic and Vedic charts use whole signs, one sign to one house, because that’s how those traditions have always read a chart. So your chart here is the one an astrologer of that tradition would draw. More on house systems. If you want every choice behind it, ask us and we’ll send it.
Can I fix my birth details after saving them?
You can correct the time and the place of a saved chart, and it’s recast right away. You can’t change the date, though, because a different date is a different person, and that’s what saving a second chart is for.
Once a report has been written from a chart, that chart locks. The report argues from those exact figures, and moving them afterwards would leave you holding a document that contradicts your own account.
How many charts can I save?
One on a free account, and that’s yours. 2 on Premium: you and one other person, whom you can swap every 30 days. 6 on Plus: you and 5 others, swapped whenever you like.
You don’t need a saved chart to get a report about someone, since any plan can type another person’s birth details in when ordering.
What happens to my birth data?
We treat it as sensitive personal information, because it is. It’s stored against your account alone, readable only by you, never put into analytics and never sold, and deleting a chart removes it along with everything computed from it.
The one exception is a report you already have. It keeps its own copy of the chart, so the PDF keeps working.
Mercury and the AI
Is the AI making the astrology up?
It isn’t calculating any of it. Positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the astronomical engine professional astrology software runs on, and houses, aspects, nakshatras, dashas, lots, dignities and the four pillars are all computed before the reading starts and handed over as fixed figures.
What the model does is interpret, which is the part that has always been interpretation. It’s explicitly told never to invent a placement, and the figures it was given are printed in every report, so you can hold the reading up against the chart yourself.
We check the arithmetic against NASA. For anyone born since 1900, no position in our chart differs from JPL’s own planetary ephemeris by as much as one arcsecond, and a chart is drawn to the arcminute, which is sixty of those. Bring it to an astrologer and it’ll match their software.
Why not just ask an AI chatbot about my chart?
You can, but double-check what it tells you about your chart. Chatbots are great talkers and they guess your chart while they talk. In our test, 100% of the chart facts in Mercury’s readings were right, and the best AI chatbot got about 90%. It also told one person whose chart was correct that it was probably a mix-up, which is a little rich coming from the one doing the guessing.
And it gets worse outside Western astrology. The best chatbot got every Western chart right but the Chinese four pillars wrong 1 time in 4, and it took almost 4 minutes to work out one chart. Mercury works out all four traditions exactly, in milliseconds.
Mercury does the math first, has each tradition’s rules built in and doesn’t make up dates. On Premium and Plus it also remembers what you tell it from one conversation to the next. See the test, or everything Mercury does differently.
Is any of this going to tell me what to do?
It helps you think, and the deciding stays with you. Astrology here is a vocabulary for your own life, for noticing a pattern, understanding someone close to you or seeing a season as a chapter with a shape. Readings describe patterns and periods, never a schedule of events. What astrology is.
Nothing in this product is medical, legal or financial guidance. For those, talk to someone qualified, and Mercury will tell you the same.
Reports
Should I ask Mercury, or get a report?
Ask Mercury what something means. Get a report when you want to know when.
Mercury reads moments, so your chart and today’s sky, and on a paid plan any date you name. It can tell you Saturn is closing on your Sun and what that asks of you, but it isn’t given when that began or when it ends, on any plan, and it won’t guess.
The timing reports are built from exactly those dates, computed before a word is written:
- Right Now. What’s active in your life now, dated: what ended in the last month, what’s running, and what arrives in the next three months.
- Year Ahead. The next 12 months, dated: when each influence arrives, when it peaks and when it passes.
- Look-Back. Up to 10 years behind you, read in chapters and dated: a decade, a span of years you choose, or a single year.
A report is also written once and kept, while a conversation is just a conversation.
Do my reports update if I change something?
No, and that’s deliberate. A report is written once and keeps its own copy of the chart it was written from, for good, so correcting or even deleting a chart later can’t break a report you already have, and it can’t rewrite one either. A fresh reading is a fresh report.
That’s why the order page shows you the exact date, time and place it’s about to use.
